Consistent with previous data from the iCARE study collected since March 2020, health measures involving social contact appear to have been more difficult to follow than mask wearing, hand washing and self-isolating.
Data show how physical distancing and avoiding small gatherings were the least likely to be followed “most of the time.” In terms of physical distancing, trends were relatively stable between summer (59%), fall (54%) and winter (54%). In terms of avoiding social gatherings “most of the time,” trends stayed low and in summer in the summer (31%), fall (21%) and winter (28%).
These results contrast with those showing that respondents had less trouble following three other key measures (mask wearing, hand washing, and self-isolating after suspected exposure to the virus), with a combined average level of adherence of 81%.
HAND WASHING: When asked if they were hand washing “most of the time,” 76% of respondents answered that they did during the summer, 85% of respondents answered that they did during the fall, and 78% of respondents answered that they did during the winter.
MASK WEARING: When asked if they were wearing a mask “most of the time,” 82% of respondents answered that they did during the summer, 96% of respondents answered that they did during the fall, and 84% of respondents answered that they did during the winter.
SELF-ISOLATING AFTER INFECTION OR SUSPECTED INFECTION: When asked if they were self-isolating or if “most of the time” if they were infected or suspected being infected, 74% of respondents answered that they did during the summer, 78% of respondents answered that they did during the fall, and 73% of respondents answered that they did during the winter.
