| Analysis Plan Title | Social Media as a Source of COVID-19 Vaccination Information in Canada: A Convergent Parallel Analysis |
| Analysis Plan Description | This analysis will employ a convergent parallel mixed methods approach to compare and contrast quantitative iCare data collected from Longitudinal Surveys 7-12 with qualitative data collected by CoVaRR-Net’s Pillar 8 Trust Project. It will focus particularly on analyzing Canadians’ relationships with social media as a source of information on vaccines during the initial vaccine rollout. In so doing, it will answer the following questions: (1) how do Canadians’ retrospective perceptions of trust in social media as a source for vaccination information (2024) compare with the levels of vaccine hesitancy associated with social media use during the initial vaccine rollout? and (2) to what extent do the motivations and concerns expressed in 2024 qualitative interviews explain or contrast with perceptions of vaccines identified in earlier quantitative data? Analyzed alongside one another, these questions will investigate whether Canadians’ current reflections on social media trust align with or diverge from the actual influence social media had on their hesitancy when vaccines were first introduced, while also discussing whether themes found in qualitative responses (trust in governments, lack of coherent information, and perceived inability to integrate expert advice into public health decision-making) help interpret trends seen during initial vaccination efforts. |
