Analysis Plan TitleEpistemic Trust and Vaccine Hesitancy During COVID-19 in Canada: A Mixed-Methods Study
Analysis Plan DescriptionThis analysis will employ a convergent parallel mixed methods approach to compare and contrast quantitative iCare data collected from Web-Panel Surveys 7-10 collected during the first phase of Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout with qualitative data collected by CoVaRR-Net’s Pillar 8 Trust Project. This study is guided by two research questions:
RQ1: Do distinct epistemic trust profiles (Trust, Mistrust, and Credulous) predict vaccine hesitancy among Canadians during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout?
RQ2: How do Canadians’ own accounts of trust and misinformation during the pandemic align with or diverge from the epistemic trust profiles identified in the quantitative data?
Variables related to institutional trust, trust in scientific authorities, and endorsement of COVID-19 misinformation will be used to identify distinct information epistemic trust (trust, mistrust and credulous) profiles using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA).
Once profiles are identified, associations between profile membership and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy will be examined using multivariable regression models while adjusting for survey wave and key sociodemographic covariates.
The qualitative strand will involve thematic analysis of interview data from the Trust Dynamics and Equity in Public Health in Canada project. Themes emerging from the interviews will then be compared with quantitative profile patterns to identify areas of convergence and divergence.
